The Membership Pathway
1. Initial Interest
You do not need an invitation to join. Freemasonry in West Kent explicitly states: “You don’t need to be invited, just ask!”
You can begin in one of two ways:
Speak to a Freemason you know – most will happily talk to you about their lodge and the process and you will not have to approach West Kent directly.
or
If you don’t know any members, you can contact West Kent via their website, and a Membership Officer will reach out.
2. Contact With a Membership Officer
Once you make an enquiry directly to West Kent:
- West Kent will assign a Membership Officer who will discuss your background, interests, lifestyle and availability to help match you to an appropriate lodge.
- The emphasis is on ensuring the lodge fits around your family, work, and personal commitments.
This ensures you find a lodge where you feel comfortable and can participate meaningfully.
3. Getting to Know the Lodge
Before applying:
- You may be invited to informal meetings or social events.
- You will meet members, learn about lodge culture, customs, and expectations.
Freemasonry in West Kent promotes itself as a diverse, welcoming environment focused on integrity, charity, fellowship, and self‑development.
4. Submitting an Application
Once you and the lodge agree that it’s a good fit, you will:
- Complete an official application form, normally administered by the Lodge Secretary.
- Provide basic personal details, which the United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE) may store and use to process your enquiry and verify information.
5. The Interview Stage
You will be interviewed by a small committee from the lodge, who want to:
- Understand your motivations.
- Ensure you have good character.
- Confirm you understand what membership involves.
West Kent emphasises that Freemasonry is non‑political, non‑religious, and open to people of all backgrounds.
We expect to answer Your questions
Membership Officers and interview panels want you to ask questions.
They will walk you through:
- What Freemasonry is
- What the ceremonies mean
- What the commitments are
- What to expect from lodge life
Freemasonry assumes that most candidates are unfamiliar. That’s why the early steps involve:
- Informal chats
- Introductory meetings
- Social events
- Guidance from Membership Officers
These steps allow you to learn at your own pace before you decide whether to proceed.
6. Ballot (Vote) by Lodge Members
All lodge members vote on your application using a private ballot system.
If approved, you will be invited to your Initiation Ceremony.
7. The Three Degrees (Your Journey in Freemasonry)
Once accepted, you progress through the traditional three degrees:
1. Entered Apprentice
Your initiation ceremony – the beginning of your Masonic journey.
2. Fellow Craft
A second ceremony focusing on learning, growth, and self‑improvement.
3. Master Mason
The final degree of Craft Freemasonry, completing your foundational journey.
West Kent reinforces that Freemasonry offers personal development, community service, and lifelong friendships.
8. Optional Further Progression
After becoming a Master Mason, you may choose to join:
- Other lodges
- Side orders
- The Royal Arch, considered the completion of “pure ancient Masonry” (West Kent provides a downloadable Royal Arch brochure). [westkentma…ons.org.uk]
These steps allow you to learn at your own pace before you decide whether to proceed.
West Kent highlights that they help you find a lodge that suits your lifestyle and understanding.
